Iannis Xenakis: Charisma for clarinet and cello (1971), performed by Irene Chen and cellist Karolina Öhman. Xenakis wrote the piece in memory of composer Jean-Pierre Guézec, his former student, who died at 36. The work pushes both instruments to extremes — quarter tones, wide-ranging glissandi, and gritty bow attacks near the bridge — in a taut, four-minute duo.

Pipa Yunhan Su Clarinet Irene Chen 琵琶 蘇筠涵 單簧管 陳宜君 Prospective Congruence’s abbreviation “PC” can represent many different possibilities, such as pipa and clarinet, pitch class, pacific coast, path connected, as well as probable cause, progressive contextualization and pro-choice. In the historical comparison between pipa and clarinet, pipa has almost ten times longer history then the existence of clarinet. Nevertheless, pipa serves as one of the powerful and muscular aspects in the Chinese traditional instruments, while clarinet has become the most represented woodwind instruments in contemporary music that carries wider register and diversity. The techniques in both pipa and clarinet have fully developed in 21st century. In this piece, the composer intends to merge the traditional and contemporary performance techniques and representation; moreover, creating a bridge to link these Eastern and Western instruments, not only techniques, but also cultural differences. The main focus will be the following: 1) Similarity/parallel techniques: wider register leaping within fast tempo, multiphonics for clarinet vs. pipa multiple stops tremolo (輪奏 or 滾奏), same pitch using different position (pipa: repeat same pitch by using different strings, position, and harmonic techniques; clarinet: use different keys and finger positions for same repeated pitch, etc), pipa tremolo vs clarinet flatter tongue, special effects—clarinet key clicking vs. pipa mute strings, etc. 2) Contrary/differences: pipa uses nails to pick strings vs. clarinet uses single reed wind-blowing wood pipe.
